Wolf Fang Gang

The story now turns to another matter.
After escaping from the clinic, the three young men of the Windfire Gang once again found themselves hiding in a dark corner of an alley.
“I’ve thought it through,” the tall young man said fiercely. “The reason we’re always running from place to place and hiding like this is because we have no backing! I used to think I could become stronger through my own efforts, but look where that got us—we’re still bullied by anyone who pleases.”
“Big Brother, weren’t we the ones trying to rob them?” the short, skinny youth asked in a low voice.
“Shut up!” the tall youth snapped.
“You’re not the only one with a mouth!” the short, stout youth chimed in. “We robbed him, and he fought back. Isn’t that bullying us?”
“...”
“Actually, the Wolf Fang Gang tried to recruit me long ago,” the tall youth said. “At the time, I didn’t want to live under someone else’s roof, so I refused. But I’ve changed my mind now. Why don’t we first rely on the strength of a major gang? Once we’ve grown powerful enough, we can establish our own faction.”
The Wolf Fang Gang was one of the foremost gangs in the southern district of Taotie City. Its leader was a powerhouse in the early Fifth Realm and also served as a fourth-rank consecrated official of Taotie City. He held influence in both the underworld and the respectable world.
“I agree.” The short, stout youth immediately raised his hand. “But I do have one suggestion...”
“What is it?”
“Before we join the Wolf Fang Gang, could we find another place to treat my injuries? I feel like... I’m not going to make it.” His face was deathly pale.
“Second Brother, didn’t you say just now that even taking another slash wouldn’t matter?” the short, skinny youth asked again.
“Must you remember everything?” the stout youth roared in exasperation.
...
When the three brothers arrived at the Wolf Fang Gang’s headquarters, they never dreamed that the gang leader himself would receive them in person.
“Hmm... Not bad. You’ve finally arrived! I’ve been waiting ages for you. The Wolf Fang Gang is in dire need of talents like you.”
A lean, shrewd-looking middle-aged man in embroidered robes sat high in the main seat of the hall. He studied the three youths with an elegant, amiable smile.
Seated below him was a middle-aged scholar fanning himself with a white paper fan. With his drooping mustache, he was clearly the Wolf Fang Gang’s strategist.
“Gang Leader, you... have heard of us?” The tall youth was astonished.
From the way the Wolf Fang Gang’s leader spoke, it sounded as though he had been waiting for them for a very long time. Could it be that the Windfire Gang had already made a name for itself?
“No.” The Wolf Fang Gang’s leader shook his head. “But your faces... Hmm? Why does this little fat fellow look so weak? Almost as if someone had just slashed him twice.”
As he spoke, his tone suddenly changed, and he asked in puzzlement.

“Ah, well...” The tall youth gave an awkward laugh. “My brother does have a few minor injuries, but the two of you can rest assured. By tomorrow morning, he’ll have recovered his strength and will be as sturdy as a beast.”
“Heh heh.” The stout youth could only manage a smile more hideous than a grimace.
“Tomorrow morning? That won’t do,” the gang leader said with a smile. “Before you can join the gang, you must help me complete a task as proof of your loyalty. I need you to do it tonight.”
“That soon?” The tall youth hesitated for a moment. Then he thought better of it. Being entrusted with an important task the instant they arrived proved that the gang leader recognized their abilities. He immediately clasped his hands and bowed.
“I will never fail you, Gang Leader!”
“I’ll inform you of the details later. Go down and rest for now. Get this brother some medicine to restore his strength. We can’t afford any delays.”
With a grand wave of his hand, the gang leader dismissed them.
Only after the three youths had left did the strategist reveal an expression of disdain and shake his head.
“Gang Leader, anyone can see that these three aren’t particularly bright. You could simply shove them into some branch headquarters. Why are you personally receiving such worthless trash?” he asked, somewhat puzzled.
“There’s something about my dealings with the Beast Hall that I haven’t had the chance to tell you,” the Wolf Fang Gang’s leader said with a smile.
“These past few years, the Beast Hall’s manager and we have been secretly selling demonic beasts. We’ve made quite a fortune in the shadows. The Wolf Fang Gang would never have risen to its present position without that business.”
“But now the Whale Gang has sent people to investigate, and the Beast Hall’s accounts are bound to be impossible to reconcile. Xu Nanling said that unless we create a major incident, we’ll all die!”
The strategist fell silent, pondering this. “He wants you to handle it personally? You’d better be careful. He might sell you out as a disposable pawn.”
“The Whale Gang is watching all his men, so it would indeed be inconvenient for him to act. He has already prepared everything involving the demonic beasts. Tonight, all I need to do is release them. Once the entire city descends into chaos, the discrepancy in the number of beasts will naturally seem plausible.”
“But will the Whale Gang really let the matter rest?” the strategist asked. Before the gang leader could answer, a smile soon spread across his face. “So that’s why you found a few scapegoats with no connection to us?”
“Exactly.” The Wolf Fang Gang’s leader smiled. “Those three pieces of trash have absolutely nothing to do with the Wolf Fang Gang. Tonight, I’ll have them hold off the pursuers behind me. Once Xu Nanling arrives, he’ll kill them all. With the dead unable to testify, who could possibly suspect us?”
“A brilliant plan!” The strategist applauded.
...
That night.
The three youths waited at the designated street corner. According to the plan, when the gang leader passed through, they were to spread a golden net and stop the pursuers behind him.
The Wolf Fang Gang’s leader had not even told them what he was going out to do, so the three were not particularly nervous.
“This task is child’s play. Once we finish it, we’ll be able to join the Wolf Fang Gang. Come on, give it everything you’ve got!” the tall youth encouraged his brothers.
“But, Big Brother, I have another suggestion,” the stout youth suddenly said.
“What is it?” The tall youth and the skinny youth turned to him.

As the stout youth spoke, a glimmer of wisdom once again shone in his eyes.
“They say fortune favors those who brave danger...”
“There’s a hidden compartment in the gang leader’s bedroom, and inside it is a treasure chest. It must contain his most prized possessions from all these years. Later, we can find an opportunity to steal it and then flee the city!”
“That... might actually work,” the tall youth said. “But how did you learn something so secret?”
“The gang leader’s wife told the strategist while they were in bed,” the stout youth replied. “Then the strategist told the wife of the Second Hall Master while they were in bed. The Second Hall Master’s wife told the Third Hall Master while they were in bed. The Third Hall Master told the gang physician’s wife while they were in bed. The physician’s wife came back the next day and told the physician. The physician got drunk, and when I went to him for treatment, he told me.”
“...”
The tall youth and the skinny youth were utterly dumbfounded.
While the two were still staring blankly, a commotion erupted in the distance. They immediately gathered themselves, and an inky figure came hurtling toward them with the speed of a gale.
They could barely make out the figure. It was little more than a whirlwind of black. Had the black wind not shouted “Stop him!” as it passed, they would never have realized that it was the gang leader.
At the command, the three youths instantly sprang into action. As inadequate as they were, all three were cultivators of the Divine Intent Realm. Handling such a small task was well within their abilities.
The stout youth and the skinny youth summoned golden nets on either side of the street, while the tall youth formed hand seals and activated the array markings in an instant.
A golden net that blotted out the sky and sun spread open. The Man-Faced Demon nearly crashed into it! But the moment it was forced to slow down, Chu Liang, who had been following behind, immediately caught up.
The instant the stout youth saw Chu Liang, alarm bells rang in his mind.
Bad!
It was him again!
Almost instinctively, the stout youth turned and fled. Whenever he saw that face, his back began to burn with pain!
“Second Brother?”
The tall youth and the skinny youth saw him suddenly turn and run for his life. The golden net instantly lost a corner, so they simply chased after him as well.
“Why are you running?” the tall youth asked in a deep voice after catching up with him.
“I can’t stay! If I don’t run, I’ll get stabbed in the back again!” the stout youth shouted as he ran.
“But...” the skinny youth said softly. “Second Brother, you’ve already been stabbed in the back.”
“Huh?”
The stout youth glanced over his shoulder and discovered that, sure enough, that familiar blue blade of light was sticking out of his back once again. His equally familiar scream immediately tore through the night sky.
“Ah—”
