Volume One, Chapter Seven: Lin Hongye Has a Secret
He spoke, then took out two tokens and placed them on Lin Yang’s desk.
Lin Yang picked them up and saw that one was the token of an outer sect elder of the Great Wilderness Immortal Sect, while the other bore the character “Master.”
“Sect Leader, what is this?” Lin Yang asked, puzzled. Zhang Xianfeng slowly explained:
“Your master devoted himself completely to our Great Wilderness Immortal Sect, serving until his death. How could we possibly stand by and watch his only disciple fall into ruin?”
“The rule is that if there are no disciples, the Chiyang Peak must be disbanded, but I have discussed it with the other elders.”
“If Chiyang Peak is truly disbanded, we’ll let you serve as an outer sect elder. You won’t have much to do—just tend to some flowers and plants to cultivate yourself.”
“Alternatively, we can assign you to some dynasty under the sect’s jurisdiction as a national tutor. That would be a leisurely and comfortable life.”
“Only, we didn’t expect this kind of trouble to arise today.”
Zhang Xianfeng sighed deeply. The trouble he referred to, of course, was Lin Hongye’s enrollment at Chiyang Peak.
Lin Yang stared at the two tokens on the table, his thoughts suddenly complicated.
Without the system, his fate might really have been one of these two options.
But regrettably, with the system’s task failure erased, Lin Yang had no choice at all.
Having said that, Zhang Xianfeng rose and patted Lin Yang’s shoulder.
“All right. In a month’s time, decide for yourself whether you want to be an elder or a national tutor.”
“You can stay at Chiyang Peak if you wish, but from that moment on, the Great Wilderness Immortal Sect will no longer have Chiyang Peak. That is non-negotiable.”
With that, Zhang Xianfeng was about to leave, but Lin Yang suddenly spoke up:
“Sect Leader, what if Lin Hongye wins?”
Zhang Xianfeng turned back in surprise and shook his head helplessly.
“Lin Hongye has indeed broken through to the Golden Core Realm, surpassing most of the inner sect disciples, but there are still some inner sect disciples who are also at the Golden Core Realm.”
“She’s not even a true heir disciple, so she simply cannot win.”
“And yet?”
Lin Yang persisted tirelessly.
Zhang Xianfeng snorted coldly, “If she really wins, then according to the original wager, she stays on at Chiyang Peak.”
With that, Zhang Xianfeng swiftly flew away, leaving the two tokens on the table.
Lin Yang did not even glance at them and tossed them directly into the drawer.
With the system’s existence, Lin Yang was confident he could ensure Lin Hongye’s victory. He didn’t need to consider these so-called fallback plans.
...
Zhang Xianfeng returned to the main hall, where many elders were gathered.
He took the main seat, and only then did the others dare to take their seats.
“Since everyone is here, let’s discuss Lin Hongye’s breakthrough to the Golden Core Realm,” said the master of Symbol Peak, nodding.
“When I first saw Lin Hongye, her cultivation was at the peak of the crystallization stage, still some distance from the Golden Core Realm. It was absolutely impossible for her to break through so quickly.”
The master of Craft Peak guessed, “Could it be that after returning to Chiyang Peak, Lin Yang gave Lin Hongye some pills to help her break through to the Golden Core Realm in time for the wager a month from now?”
Before anyone else could speak, the master of Alchemy Peak snorted disdainfully.
“Impossible. No pill, no matter how potent, can enable someone to break through to the Golden Core Realm in just a few hours.”
“Moreover, when Lin Hongye broke through, the energy fluctuations showed she wasn’t just barely entering the realm. It seemed more like she had consolidated her foundation thoroughly before breaking through.”
“This means the girl’s cultivation and foundation are exceptionally solid, but she concealed this before joining the sect.”
“Lin Hongye carries secrets.”
The master of Sword Peak, Wang Zide, also snorted coldly and added:
“So what if she has secrets? Since she has joined our Great Wilderness Immortal Sect, she belongs to us now. We should be eager for her cultivation to improve.”
Zhang Xianfeng nodded solemnly.
“Exactly. Trust those we employ; distrust means not employing. Since she has joined the Great Wilderness Immortal Sect, she is one of us.”
“No matter what secrets she holds, as long as she isn’t a threat to us, we should protect her, not suspect her.”
“After all, her talent is astonishing. She is definitely the future of our Great Wilderness Immortal Sect.”
The peak masters below exchanged glances and echoed their agreement. Zhang Xianfeng nodded in satisfaction and continued:
“So, you peak masters must urge your disciples to train hard. Otherwise, in a month, Lin Hongye might truly defeat them.”
“If that happens, it won’t just be your disciples who are embarrassed, but all of you peak masters as well.”
The other peak masters took this seriously.
Whether or not it was embarrassing was a minor issue; the main concern was that if Lin Hongye won, she would have to remain at Chiyang Peak!
If she stayed at the main peak of Chiyang Peak, it would be tantamount to Lin Yang destroying the future of an entire sect!
...
Meanwhile, Lin Yang lay in the hot spring pool he had built, listening to the system’s prompt sounds and nodding with satisfaction.
[Ping! Lin Hongye has gained insight into the Immortal Fire Path! Immortal Fire Path comprehension increased!]
[Ping! Lin Hongye has gained insight into the Immortal Fire Path! Immortal Fire Path comprehension increased!]
[Ping! Lin Hongye has gained insight into the Immortal Fire Path! Immortal Fire Path comprehension increased!]
...
Even after several hours had passed, Lin Hongye was still carefully pondering Lin Yang’s words.
Each time she analyzed them, it brought her new understanding, causing her comprehension of the Immortal Fire Path to rise continuously.
The only slight drawback was that Lin Yang’s own Immortal Fire Path had already reached perfection and could not improve further.
This meant that Lin Hongye’s progress no longer benefited Lin Yang.
Lin Yang sighed, “I wonder when that girl will start training.”
Although his Immortal Fire Path was perfected, his cultivation was only at the peak of enlightenment, so Lin Hongye’s cultivation progress was still useful to him.
But he could not force her to train; she was seriously contemplating her insights at this moment.
“Well, she will train when the time comes.”
With that, Lin Yang stopped worrying and got out of the hot spring, donned a teal robe, and returned to his room to sleep.
...
The next day arrived. Lin Yang had barely opened his eyes when the system’s prompt sounded:
