“What fact? The candied hawthorn was nothing but your excuse. You did it for that stand-in who came out of nowhere.”

“Song Jinwei is my woman. No one gets to bully her.” Fu Siyue turned his hostility toward the stand-in.

The word “stand-in” struck a raw nerve in Wei Xifeng. “Who are you calling a stand-in? She is not a stand-in.” Like a beast whose whiskers had been ripped out, Wei Xifeng bared one of his fangs with a savage snarl.

Fu Siyue had never expected Wei Xifeng to protect a stand-in so fiercely.

And not just any stand-in—Qiao Yiran’s.

Did Wei Xifeng value Qiao Yiran’s stand-in this much?

“Whether she is a stand-in or not, you had better keep a close eye on her.”

“You’re the one who should be keeping an eye on her. Stop letting Song Jinwei out to bite people. If there’s a next time, she won’t be coming back.”

A savage, bloodthirsty scent seeped from between Wei Xifeng’s lips and teeth.

Fu Siyue’s brows drew together even more deeply. Had Wei Xifeng gone mad over a mere stand-in, to the point of disregarding their brotherly bond entirely?

Who was the one biting people indiscriminately? At that moment, Wei Xifeng truly resembled a vicious beast guarding its young, ready to bite anyone who came near.

“If anything happens to Song Jinwei, I’ll settle the score with your stand-in.”

“You dare.” Fu Siyue actually wanted to harm the teacher. “Fu Siyue, have you lost your mind? You will regret this—without a doubt.” Wei Xifeng spoke with absolute certainty.

Fu Siyue only said such things because he did not know who that person was. Once he learned that the target of his malice was the teacher, he would certainly wish to slap himself twice.

But Wei Xifeng had no intention of telling Fu Siyue about the teacher.

He did not want anyone competing with him for the teacher.

A fierce possessiveness surged once more in Wei Xifeng’s eyes.

“And I’ll say it again: she is not a stand-in. You will regret insulting her with that word.”

With that, Wei Xifeng hung up. He even felt like blocking and deleting Fu Siyue, along with everyone else.

Staring at the phone’s black screen, Fu Siyue felt baffled. Wei Xifeng seemed to be implying something.

What made him so certain that Fu Siyue would regret it?

Could it be that the stand-in was not only important to Wei Xifeng, but also held some special significance for him?

Fu Siyue found the thought amusing.

Still, Wei Xifeng’s reaction had undeniably been strange, and Fu Siyue could not stop himself from investigating.

He had barely begun when a tremendous crash came from Song Jinwei’s room.

Fu Siyue hurried over instinctively.

Song Jinwei was throwing a tantrum. She had driven out all the servants and the family doctor.

Fu Siyue did not enter. The moment Song Jinwei saw him standing outside, she slammed the door shut with all her strength, making her displeasure unmistakable.

Then she locked the door from inside.

Wasn’t he going to keep her confined? Fine—she would give him exactly what he wanted.

The violent boom exploded like thunder. Fu Siyue’s mind seemed to be struck by the sound of the closing door.

A nerve in his head twitched, and pain began to spread.

Lin Feng asked, “Sir, shall I open the door?”

“No. Let her be.”

The moment Fu Siyue finished speaking, a wild series of crashes erupted from inside the room, followed by Song Jinwei’s shriek after shriek.

Before long, Fu Siyue’s face had gone pale. Even his tall, imposing body, which seemed indestructible, swayed unsteadily.

Lin Feng’s eyelid twitched. Alarmed, he immediately caught hold of Fu Siyue. “Sir, are you all right?”

It felt as though steel needles had been driven into Fu Siyue’s skull. Song Jinwei’s shrill voice seemed to be slicing his brain apart piece by piece. He raised a hand and pressed it hard against his head, overwhelmed by an excruciating headache.

Watching Fu Siyue gasp uncontrollably in agony, sweat beading on his forehead, Lin Feng immediately realized that his chronic headaches had struck again.

He did not call for the family doctor. Instead, he quickly helped Fu Siyue away. Neither medication nor physical treatment was effective for Fu Siyue. If anything, they only provoked fierce resistance.

The only thing they could do was remove him from the source of the stimulation.

As far as Lin Feng knew, Fu Siyue’s headaches had plagued him since childhood.

Whenever an attack came, the pain was unbearable, and he would lie awake all night.

Song Jinwei knew perfectly well that Fu Siyue suffered from these headaches, yet she deliberately provoked an attack.

She understood Fu Siyue, which was why she could hurt him so easily.

Lin Feng turned and cast a vicious glare at Song Jinwei’s door, wishing his gaze could pierce through it and strike her directly.

This was not the first time Song Jinwei had done something like this—not even the second. Every time Fu Siyue refused to let her sneak out to look for Fu Qinian, she would stage such a scene.

As long as an action could provoke him, anger him, or make him suffer, she would carry it out without hesitation.

Tattoos, rainbow-colored hair, smoky makeup painted like strange symbols, bizarre and deliberately rebellious clothing, lip studs, tongue studs, eyebrow studs, navel piercings, and all the rest—she did it all to defy Fu Siyue.

Once they had moved far enough away from Song Jinwei’s room, Lin Feng helped Fu Siyue sit down on the sofa. He then quickly poured a cup of calming tea and placed it on the table beside him.

Fu Siyue kept his eyes closed, his brows tightly furrowed as he endured wave after wave of agony. His deep, resolute face was twisted with suffering, and fine beads of sweat still clung to the tip of his nose.

In truth, Fu Siyue’s headaches were not entirely incurable.

Twenty years earlier, the young stepmother who had come for him had held him in her arms and sung a unique melody above his head, soothing and healing him.

But soon afterward, because he had been too weak, he lost her forever. She died before his eyes…

Fu Siyue’s headaches returned because of it.

Later, Song Jinwei had forced her way into his world despite his irritation. She had volunteered to become his “medicine,” and she began singing to ease his headaches. Though her healing could never compare with that of his young stepmother, it had still produced a certain medicinal effect, easing his suffering.

But after so many years, the medicine Song Jinwei gave him had changed from an antidote into poison.

And yet, even if it was poison, he still did not want to let it go.

Through the gaps between his fingers, Fu Siyue opened a pair of bloodshot eyes. His dark, brooding gaze was filled with an obsession that gnawed straight into the bone.

…

At dawn, Jiang Liwu rose early to exercise. She wore a matching sports bra and athletic shorts, her smooth, rounded head crowned with a high ponytail that made her look youthful, radiant, and full of energy.

Her limbs were long and slender, her muscles and subtle abdominal definition perfectly sculpted. Under the morning light, her skin was dazzlingly fair.

The Wei family’s manor was surrounded by a private forest that stretched beyond the limits of sight. Waves of emerald green spread across the land, and the air was so fresh and sweet that it seemed almost intoxicating.

Jiang Liwu breathed it in greedily. Every sight here lifted her spirits, and her face shone with a vibrant smile.

Then, without warning, disaster struck.

A tall, powerful black figure burst from the dense forest beside her and suddenly engulfed Jiang Liwu.

The shadow pounced on her with the ferocity and speed of a predator bringing down its prey.

Jiang Liwu did not even have time to utter a final scream.

More than ten seconds later, Qiao Yiran could no longer contain herself and came running over.
