Chapter 106: Labor and Income Will Be Directly Proportional

After hearing this, Gu Xiaoshu clenched his fists and made up his mind. Tomorrow, he would finish reclaiming the wasteland properly.
Even if he were the only one working, he had to see the task through. Otherwise, his sister would have to do everything herself.
“I understand, Sister. Don’t worry. I’ll reclaim the wasteland properly.”
“But, Sister, can we really find a way to make money? It seems very difficult for anyone from the village to go into the city and earn a living.”
Even getting hired as a waiter in a restaurant was nearly impossible for the villagers. The dock, however, was always willing to take laborers to carry cargo.
As long as a person had no serious illness and possessed some strength, he could be chosen. Even if he did have health problems, no one cared—if he died, it had nothing to do with anyone else.
“Don’t worry. I’ll find a way to make money. Leave this to me. You don’t need to fret; I know what I’m doing.”
Gu Xiaoyao was certain she could find a way to earn money. The only question was whether she would earn a little or a lot.
As Madam Li watched the siblings discuss how to make money, she could not help blaming her own useless body.
How could she still not have recovered after several days of rest? Now she would have to remain in bed for several more days. The thought of being unable to work and holding them back for so long filled her with self-loathing.
“Xiaoyao, Xiaoshu, I’m sorry. Your mother is simply no use. If only my health were a little better, I could help you with the work.”

At present, she could do only the lightest tasks. She could not even enter the kitchen. She truly felt utterly useless.
“Mother, you don’t need to blame yourself. Recover first. Once your health improves, you’ll be able to do more work. There’s no need to hurry now.”
Gu Xiaoyao patted her hand and noticed that some of her fingers had been scraped raw. After examining them carefully, she fetched a jar of ointment.
“You need to put some ointment on those wounds. They’ll heal faster that way.”
Madam Liu’s shrill voice had already carried into the room from outside. Unlike Gu Xiaoyao, Madam Li could not remain calm upon hearing it; she grew increasingly uneasy.
“Xiaoyao, we should hurry and move out. Your mother-in-law sounds truly furious.”
“Don’t pay them any mind. They’re merely full because they have nothing better to do. Rest properly. Xiaoshu, I’m hungry. Is the food ready?”
Their room had not yet been cleaned up, so there was no way they could move in just yet. At the earliest, it would have to be the day after tomorrow.
“It’s ready. The dishes are in the kitchen. I’ll bring them in now.”
When Gu Xiaoshu went outside, he saw Madam Liu and the two Chu brothers glaring furiously. He could not help feeling somewhat uneasy.
Chu Chengjin watched the three of them quarrel for a while, his gaze cool and indifferent. Then he turned, went inside, and returned with a money pouch. Copper coins jingled within.

“You want money? Fine. Come with me tomorrow to reclaim the wasteland. If you do a good job, this pouch will be yours.”
When Madam Liu saw that he had money but refused to hand it over without conditions, she immediately sat down on the ground and began wailing.
“Damn you! I’m your own mother! I ask you for money, and now you expect me to work for you too?”
“Am I still your mother or not? Are you trying to work me to death so you can elevate that damned woman in the house?”
Seeing how vigorously she carried on, Chu Chengjin put the pouch away. He leaned leisurely against the doorframe, as though he could no longer bear the sound of her crying.
“If you keep crying, you won’t receive a single coin from this pouch. And if you refuse to work, you won’t get another coin from me ever again.”
“The Chu family does not support useless people. Do you understand?”
When Madam Liu and Chu Qingsong saw how serious Chu Chengjin was, they lost their nerve. They all knew that he meant every word.
