Chapter 27: The Black-Hearted Hospital: The Arrest
Lin Xiaoyan suppressed the panic in her heart as she was led into the operating room. However, even as the anesthesiologist slowly administered the anesthetic and her consciousness began to fade, she still did not see He Qi'an or the others. In the final second before her consciousness slipped away, she couldn't help but curse.
"What?" The anesthesiologist leaned over to her lips, asking what she had said. After waiting a moment, he realized she had already fallen into a deep stupor. He hadn't heard her clearly, but the people behind the monitor had heard her perfectly. What she had said was, "He Qi'an, you bastard, you lied to me..."
Li He tried his best to hold back a laugh, stealing a glance at his boss in front of him. He Qi'an’s face was dark as he watched the monitor.
"Director, the drug has taken effect; the patient is now unconscious."
"Good. Bring the client in."
A rumble echoed as another surgical bed was wheeled in. On it lay a middle-aged man, who was positioned right next to Lin Xiaoyan.
"Mr. Gu, the donor is ready. If you are prepared, we shall begin the surgery," Director Xia said respectfully, looking at the man on the bed.
The man lowered his eyelids. "Yes, proceed."
"Very well. Rest assured, you will see the light again in three days."
Just as Director Xia picked up the scalpel, the door to the operating room was suddenly thrown open. "Don't move!"
Director Xia frowned, looking up to reprimand the intruder, only to find a group of police officers in uniform with their weapons drawn...
"Wake up... Xiaoyan, wake up..."
Lin Xiaoyan was roused by the gentle tapping. She looked at Xiang Rong, wishing she could just close her eyes and sleep a little longer. It felt so comfortable; a dreamless sleep was truly wonderful!
"Xiaoyan, wake up, don't go back to sleep..." Seeing Lin Xiaoyan’s eyes flutter shut again, Xiang Rong continued to pat her shoulder gently.
As her consciousness gradually returned, the thought of her eyes suddenly struck her. Lin Xiaoyan snapped her eyes open and looked at Xiang Rong. "My... my eyes..."
Xiang Rong laughed. "There is nothing wrong with your eyes."
"And those people..."
"They have all been taken into custody!"
Hearing this, Lin Xiaoyan finally felt at ease. She closed her eyes, wanting to drift off again.
"You can't sleep now. Dr. Yang gave orders that you mustn't sleep once you've woken up."
Helpless, Lin Xiaoyan had to keep her eyes open. After lying there for another half hour, she finally regained her strength. She changed her clothes, and Xiang Rong had already completed the discharge paperwork. On the way out of the hospital, Lin Xiaoyan walked with her arms swaying "accidentally," lightly brushing against the patients she passed. Although she still "saw" that some were nearing death, the horrific visions of unnatural demise were gone. She was overjoyed; she never expected that one day she would be able to help the police solve cases!
Xiang Rong dropped Lin Xiaoyan off at home and said, "Rest well for a few days. Captain He said that once the hospital matter is fully resolved, your bonus should be processed."
Hearing the word "bonus" made Lin Xiaoyan’s heart race with excitement.
After Xiang Rong left in a hurry, Lin Xiaoyan turned on the electric fan, and the stuffy room finally felt a bit cooler. *I wonder how much that bonus will be...* She thought expectantly, opening her banking app to check her meager balance of 1,500 yuan. *Just hold on a little longer, a deposit is coming soon!*
Wait! Suddenly, she remembered she still had to go to work! It was already afternoon, but she would go tomorrow. Every little bit helped! Before the salary from the Bureau of Investigation and the police bonus arrived, she still had to work hard to earn money. With that weight off her mind, she finally had a good night's sleep.
"Xiaoyan, you're finally back at work! I missed you so much!"
Lin Xiaoyan was sitting at her desk when Su Shan ran over, looking excited. "Xiaoyan, what happened? Why did you take so many days off?"
Lin Xiaoyan shook her head. "Just some minor things, but they've all been resolved."
"That's good. If you ever need help, just let me know!"
"Okay, thank you, Shanshan."
Su Shan patted her shoulder. "You're welcome."
"Xiao Lin, how are you feeling today? Are you tired? Don't worry, none of this is urgent..."
As Lin Xiaoyan was working, her manager suddenly approached her, offering warm greetings with a beaming smile. Lin Xiaoyan was a bit flattered and quickly waved her hand, saying she wasn't tired. After a few more polite inquiries, the manager walked away.
Feeling the gazes from all around, Lin Xiaoyan hunched over, suppressing her embarrassment as she continued to work. She could probably guess why the manager's attitude had changed. It must have been because of Captain He, who had said he knew the company owner and had arranged for her paid leave. Throughout the day, colleagues who usually never spoke to her kept coming over to chat. These changes made Lin Xiaoyan feel miserable. She really didn't like being the center of attention; she enjoyed working quietly and felt most comfortable when no one paid her any mind.
At noon, when Su Shan started fishing for information about whether Lin Xiaoyan had any special family background, Lin Xiaoyan knew she probably wouldn't be able to stay in this job for much longer. She returned home feeling dejected and let out a deep sigh. She would stick it out for another month; once the pay from the Investigation Bureau came through, she would quit this job and find another one!
For the next two days, there was no news from the police station, but she saw reports on the news that Aier Hospital had been sealed off. It was revealed that everyone from the director down to the nurses had been involved in long-term human trafficking and organ harvesting. It became a hot topic online overnight.
On this day, Lin Xiaoyan overslept and was almost late. When she rushed to the company, she had only five minutes to spare. She saw an elevator door slowly closing and sprinted toward it, shouting, "Wait!"
*Ding.* The doors opened. Lin Xiaoyan hurried inside, gasping for air, and thanked the people inside. She kept her head down, not noticing the man standing at the back. The man’s gaze lingered on her, his eyes filled with curiosity.
Jing Yi watched her. Back when that guy He Qi'an had requested leave for her, he had asked his assistant to pull up her file. Looking at Lin Xiaoyan, whose appearance was not striking—only "delicate" or "pretty" at best—and reading her file, which showed a normal family and an average university education, everything seemed plain. He didn't know what it was about her that had attracted that guy's attention.
Lin Xiaoyan had no idea that the man behind her was her top boss, nor did she know that she had caught his attention.
