Chapter Thirty: A Successful Rescue
"Did you leave your brain back in the capital when you moved here?" He Qi'an asked bluntly.
Jing Yi looked at him with suspicion. "If you have nothing to do with her, why did you tell me to instruct my staff to give her paid leave? And why did you come here today? Isn't it because she was hit by a delivery driver this morning, and you came to settle the score for her?"
"..." He Qi'an didn't want to dignify that with a response. He truly didn't understand how this guy had turned into such a fool after leaving the capital.
Li He and the others standing nearby stifled their laughter, afraid to speak.
Jing Yi turned his gaze to them. "Hey, why did you bring them here? It's past working hours. Aren't you going to let them go home?"
After sending a message to Lin Xiaoyan, He Qi'an looked up at Jing Yi. "Because you are going to die tonight, so we aren't going home—we're here specifically to save you."
Jing Yi’s face darkened instantly. "I haven't provoked you! Is it necessary to be so unpleasant?"
He Qi'an ignored him.
"Hey, explain yourself, or we won't be able to remain brothers!" Jing Yi stared at him, angry.
Li He quickly stepped in to explain, "Boss Jing, our captain is telling the truth. You are indeed going to run into trouble tonight, so as soon as he found out, he rushed over here to save you..."
After hearing this, Jing Yi frowned and looked at He Qi'an. "Really?"
He Qi'an glanced at him, still choosing not to engage. "Li He, go to the elevator and meet Lin Xiaoyan."
"Yes, Captain." Li He hurried out.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" Jing Yi looked at He Qi'an. "Was it that master in the capital who told you this? That can't be right—Master Mingkong said my benefactor was in Hai City, but he never mentioned when I would be in danger..." Jing Yi muttered to himself, lost in thought.
*Knock, knock.*
Li He walked in with Lin Xiaoyan.
As Lin Xiaoyan entered the office, she saw the man from that morning sitting in the executive chair and realized he was her immediate superior.
"Good evening, Boss. Good evening, Captain He. Hello, everyone..." Lin Xiaoyan greeted everyone in the room.
Jing Yi: ...
He Qi'an: ...
The others: ...
After the greetings, Lin Xiaoyan felt the atmosphere in the office turn awkward. She lowered her head, wondering if she had said something wrong.
He Qi'an glared at Jing Yi and the others, his voice softening as he said, "Xiao Lin, have a seat. What would you like to drink?" He opened the office refrigerator and asked her.
Lin Xiaoyan shook her head. "No, thank you. I'm fine."
He Qi'an glanced into the fridge, grabbed a random drink, and placed it in front of her. "Just have something."
"Thank you," Lin Xiaoyan said softly, though she didn't open it.
Jing Yi looked at her timid, head-down posture with a hint of disdain. He Qi'an caught his expression and gave him a warning look.
"She is the one who saw that you are going to be kidnapped tonight..." He Qi'an relayed what Lin Xiaoyan had told him earlier.
Upon hearing this, Jing Yi’s perspective on her shifted. "What’s going on?" He stood up, walked over, and sat down opposite her, eyeing her with a mix of scrutiny and curiosity.
He Qi'an asked Lin Xiaoyan to show Jing Yi her credentials. Obediently, she took out her newly issued ID and placed it on the table.
Jing Yi stared at the familiar document, disbelief etched on his face. "No way, is this real?" He picked it up, opened it, and saw the official seal. He closed the document and pushed it back to her, whispering, "You should put this away... and, uh, thank you."
Zhang Ming craned his neck, dying to see what was written on the ID. It was a credential issued by the National Special Investigation Bureau! Even though he hadn't known such an agency existed until today, his curiosity was piqued.
Lin Xiaoyan tucked the ID back into her bag and murmured, "You're welcome. And I should thank you for this morning as well."
Watching her gentle demeanor, a rare feeling of guilt crept up in Jing Yi. He turned and glared at He Qi'an. Why hadn't he told him about Lin Xiaoyan sooner? He wouldn't have acted that way...
He Qi'an ignored the erratic man. He sat down and began to question Lin Xiaoyan in detail about the kidnapping.
"In the vision you saw, what time was it?"
Lin Xiaoyan thought for a moment. "It was already dark, but I don't know the exact time."
"Did you see what the kidnapper looked like?"
"He had short hair, a stocky build, and was very strong. When he tried to grab the steering wheel, he pushed him into the passenger seat with one shove."
He Qi'an and his men looked at Jing Yi, scanning him from head to toe, their eyes filled with disdain.
Jing Yi: ...He worked out year-round, okay? It must have been the cramped space in the car that made him unable to maneuver, which is why he got pushed over!
"Which stretch of road did the accident happen on?"
Lin Xiaoyan hung her head, trying to recall. "It seemed to be after crossing a bridge... then there was a collision with a large truck..."
"A large truck?" He Qi'an caught the key detail.
"Yes, a heavy-duty truck..."
Li He immediately noted, "Trucks aren't allowed in the downtown area of Hai City until after nine o'clock at night."
Zhang Ming thought for a moment. "There are three bridges in this vicinity..."
He Qi'an and his team huddled together to analyze the situation. Once the discussion ended, He Qi'an checked the time; it was already seven o'clock. He looked at Lin Xiaoyan apologetically. "I'm sorry, we've taken up so much of your time."
Lin Xiaoyan shook her head. "It's fine. It's part of my duty." Since joining the National Special Investigation Bureau, she carried a new sense of responsibility.
Given the danger ahead, He Qi'an sent Li He to escort Lin Xiaoyan downstairs and put her in a taxi to go home.
The next morning, when Lin Xiaoyan opened her eyes, she saw a notification on her phone from the Investigation Bureau app. A new entry had been added to her service record: *Rescued Young Master Jing Yi of the Jing family, helping him avert a crisis...*
Seeing this, she knew Jing Yi must be safe.
When she stepped downstairs to head to work, she saw He Qi'an leaning against his car, smoking. He stubbed out the cigarette the moment he saw her.
"Captain He?" Lin Xiaoyan looked at him, puzzled as to why he was waiting for her so early.
He Qi'an opened the car door. "I'll drive you to work, and I have a few things to tell you."
Lin Xiaoyan got in, and He Qi'an drove toward her workplace.
"Here, I bought this on the way. You should eat." He handed her a breakfast of soy milk, *youtiao*, steamed buns, and an egg.
Lin Xiaoyan was taken aback; she wanted to say she had already eaten, but when the aroma of the buns hit her, her stomach betrayed her with a loud growl. She took the breakfast and whispered her thanks.
