Chapter Four: Reevaluating the Eyes
“Hello, oh, Dr. Yang?” Lin Xiaoyan looked surprised to see that the attending doctor was Dr. Yang.
“You’re here,” Yang Lin smiled as soon as he saw Lin Xiaoyan. “I was expecting you for your follow-up today. Please, have a seat.”
Lin Xiaoyan quickly sat down, then felt a bit embarrassed. “About the medical expenses last time, Dr. Yang, you…”
Yang Lin waved his hand and said seriously, “Actually, I want to formally thank you. I’m truly grateful for your help last time.”
Lin Xiaoyan hurriedly shook her head. “No, no, Dr. Yang. I believe anyone would have stepped in if they had seen that situation.”
Yang Lin’s handsome face broke into a smile. “But at that moment, you were the only one brave enough to stand up.”
After speaking, Yang Lin took a box from the drawer. “I hope you’ll accept this as a token of my gratitude. It will make me feel better too.”
Lin Xiaoyan looked at the gift box he handed over and quickly stood up. “Dr. Yang, this isn’t appropriate, I…”
She had never accepted gifts from others since childhood. Even among friends, she would always reciprocate with something of equal value.
Her parents had taught her early on not to accept gifts without giving anything in return—it wasn’t right.
Yang Lin laughed heartily at Lin Xiaoyan’s outright refusal. Since their last meeting, he had known this young lady looked a bit timid but had a good character.
“It’s not something expensive. It’s a pair of glasses I’ve been researching. Wearing them can alleviate eye fatigue and prevent vision damage. It’s still in the experimental stage. Consider it a trial for me,” Yang Lin opened the box to reveal a pair of glasses.
Hearing this, Lin Xiaoyan took the glasses and tried them on. After a little while, she felt their remarkable effect.
“Dr. Yang, these glasses are really comfortable to wear with my contact lenses. My left eye doesn’t feel sore anymore,” Lin Xiaoyan said with delight.
Recently, after reading so much material at work, her left eye often became sore and watery.
Just now, she looked at the writing on the wall for several minutes wearing the glasses, and her eyes didn’t feel strained at all. It seemed these glasses truly relieved eye fatigue.
Seeing Lin Xiaoyan’s happy expression, Yang Lin finally breathed a sigh of relief. He had pondered for days about what gift to give her. He knew she wouldn’t accept anything valuable.
Cheap gifts felt unsuitable to him. So, he settled on these glasses, hoping their usefulness would suffice.
“Thank you, Dr. Yang. I really like these glasses. I read a lot at work recently, so these will help a lot,” Lin Xiaoyan expressed her gratitude again.
“That’s good to hear. Now, lie down here so I can examine your eyes,” Yang Lin said with a smile as he stood up.
Lin Xiaoyan quickly lay down on the examination bed. The bright light shone on her face, making her instinctively close her eyes.
Warm fingers gently touched her left eye, carefully opening it.
Lin Xiaoyan finally relaxed—this time, she didn’t “see” anything strange. That was a relief!
“Don’t worry, I’ll take a quick look…” Yang Lin said softly.
“No problem. Your eyes have recovered well. Continue using the eye drops I gave you last time. Once finished, buy a regular eye drop for relieving eye fatigue at the pharmacy. Remember to rest your eyes regularly…”
“Okay, thank you, Dr. Yang,” Lin Xiaoyan said gratefully again.
Glancing at the time, Lin Xiaoyan hesitated for a moment and looked up at the handsome Yang Lin.
Yang Lin finished writing the notes and noticed her conflicted expression. “Is there something else? It’s okay, just speak up.”
After a brief pause, Lin Xiaoyan cautiously asked, “Dr. Yang, I wanted to ask… in movies, sometimes when people’s eyes are injured and then healed, they gain miraculous abilities—like X-ray vision or mind reading…”
Yang Lin couldn’t help but laugh. She was still a child after all.
“Those are science fiction movies. You said it yourself—they’re not real life.
As for those who develop other issues after eye injuries, it’s probably because the brain’s nervous system was affected. Such cases require prompt medical attention…”
Lin Xiaoyan’s heart sank. “O-okay, thank you, Dr. Yang.”
Yang Lin looked at her expression. “Is there any other discomfort you’re feeling?”
Lin Xiaoyan quickly shook her head. “No, no. Well… goodbye, Dr. Yang. I have to rush to work, so I won’t keep you any longer.”
With that, she immediately stood and left.
“Hey…” Yang Lin was still caught off guard when Lin Xiaoyan had already gone.
“Dr. Yang, the inpatient ward is urging again. Please take a look…” The assistant came in to remind him upon seeing Lin Xiaoyan leave.
Yang Lin regained his composure and stood up. “Let’s go.”
“Oh, okay!” The assistant followed him to the inpatient department.
“Doctor Wan, Dr. Yang has left. You should start your clinic,” the head nurse called out upon seeing Yang Lin depart.
“Coming, coming. Ah, this young Yang even came specially to wait for someone as thanks…” Doctor Wan strolled over slowly, holding a cup of tea.
Lin Xiaoyan went to work with a heavy heart. Throughout the day, Yang Lin’s words kept echoing in her mind.
She wondered if her hallucinations were caused by some problem with her brain’s nervous system.
But then she thought again—her left eye was only superficially injured; no surgery or nerve damage was involved!
“Xiao Lin, work’s over. The rest can wait until tomorrow. Looks like it’s going to rain. Let’s head home,” Aileen said, glancing at the cloudy sky while picking up her bag.
“Y-yes, thank you… Sister Lin. I’ll pack up and leave now,” Lin Xiaoyan replied tensely, suddenly alert.
She looked outside at the dark, heavy clouds and hurried to gather her things.
Seeing Lin Xiaoyan’s nervousness, Aileen smiled. “Feeling tired? The company’s new boss has made work so busy lately. Good thing you’re here, or we’d all go crazy.”
Lin Xiaoyan shook her head quickly. “No, it’s okay. I should be the one thanking you all. Otherwise, I’d still be job hunting, worrying about my next meal…”
Thinking of that, Lin Xiaoyan glanced at the now-empty seats around her, uncertain how much longer she could keep this job.
Aileen looked at the young Lin Xiaoyan, reminded of herself in the past—shy and innocent back then.
“Don’t worry. Once the company gets on track, they’ll definitely hire more people. I’ll let you know when that happens so you can come for an interview,” Aileen said, walking over and gently patting Lin Xiaoyan’s shoulder.
Suddenly, Lin Xiaoyan’s body stiffened. Her pupils dilated as she “saw” the scene again…
She “saw” Aileen alone at home at night. The doorbell rang. Aileen opened the door to find a delivery person.
Then, the delivery man didn’t leave after dropping off the package. Instead, he forced his way inside Aileen’s home, the door closing behind him, and then…
