Chapter 68: A Place of Right and Wrong
It’s often said that gossip thrives in bathrooms, and the rumors are certainly true. At this very moment, Bai Chenxi was in a bathroom stall, listening to people gossiping... about her.
“I’m telling you, those who climb the ranks through backdoor deals can never truly make it. Just look at how many times she’s messed up her scenes.”
“Exactly. I bet all her energy goes into pleasing President Jiang. How would she even have time to read the script?”
“President Jiang? Bai Chenxi is probably not his only one! He’s just playing around with her. Otherwise, why would he let her stir up so much drama?”
“Right? Look at Tang Ziyu—no rumors about her at all. The man backing her must be keeping her on a tight leash.”
“I’m telling you, with the way Bai Chenxi acts, it’s only a matter of time before she gets dumped.”
Speak for yourself! Bai Chenxi was just about to throw open the door and dramatically steal the scene when a timid female voice spoke up, “You shouldn’t say things like that. Bai Chenxi isn’t that kind of person. Besides, all those rumors were already cleared up!”
The others scoffed, “And who’d believe those so-called clarifications?”
With nothing left to say, the group lost interest and left.
Bai Chenxi pushed open the stall door and saw a girl washing her hands. The girl caught Bai Chenxi’s eye in the mirror, clearly surprised.
Flustered, she stammered, “What are you doing here? Did you... hear what just happened?”
Bai Chenxi thought she looked familiar, and after a glance in the mirror, remembered—wasn’t this the girl Sister Qing assigned for makeup?
She recalled how the girl had just spoken up for her, and now looked as if she’d done something wrong.
With a smile, Bai Chenxi reassured her, “They were the ones talking behind someone’s back. Why are you the one blushing?”
The girl gazed at her, wide-eyed and unsure. Bai Chenxi felt a bit awkward herself.
“By the way, I don’t even know your name yet!”
The young girl replied enthusiastically, “I’m Mi Mu! You can just call me Mumu.” She glanced at Bai Chenxi, then added a bit nervously, “But if you’re not used to that, call me whatever you like.”
“Mumu is a lovely name! I’ll call you that from now on.”
By the time they returned, the two were already holding hands. Xiao Yu took one look—slightly puzzled, but said nothing.
“I swear, that’s exactly what Bai Chenxi said,” Tang Ziyu said with delight, clearly pleased by the news her assistant had just delivered.
The assistant couldn’t understand why she was so focused on Bai Chenxi; she had even led the team over to watch her.
Tang Ziyu grumbled, “I’m just helping a certain brainless, blind person check things out!”
The assistant scratched her head. Who was this brainless, blind person supposed to be?
But Tang Ziyu didn’t explain further. “Come on, let’s go see what she’s got.”
The assistant sensed she wasn’t in the best mood, and hesitated.
Tang Ziyu glanced over, “Don’t worry! I’m just going to watch, nothing else.”
With Meng Ling already enough trouble for her, the assistant thought Tang Ziyu looked like she was going to stir up some drama. Maybe the scene earlier had somehow unblocked Bai Chenxi’s creative energy, because everything she filmed afterwards went smoothly.
There are always people in this world who, no matter where they are or what they’re doing, effortlessly become the center of attention. Tang Ziyu was one of them.
As soon as Tang Ziyu walked over, she drew every eye. Even dressed in a maid’s costume, she was impossible to ignore.
Bai Chenxi watched enviously, thinking, When will I ever have that kind of presence?
Tang Ziyu’s gaze swept over too. This time, without sunglasses, their eyes met in the air, and Bai Chenxi could practically see sparks flying.
She looked away. It wasn’t her imagination—Tang Ziyu was definitely provoking her.
Bai Chenxi really had no idea what she’d done to offend this queen.
She just felt increasingly out of place in this crew. Barely a day had passed, and already she’d run into nothing but trouble. It felt like everyone had it in for her.
When Director Li saw Tang Ziyu, his attitude was the complete opposite of how he treated Bai Chenxi. “Ziyu, you’re here!”
Tang Ziyu nodded politely. “Director, I just wanted to observe and learn a bit.”
Director Li nodded back. “No wonder your acting is so good! Not like certain people, whose performance is terrible, and who run off the moment the scene ends—never improving at all.”
As he spoke, he kept glancing at Bai Chenxi. Tang Ziyu looked at Bai Chenxi with some surprise—she hadn’t expected Director Li to appreciate her so much.
Bai Chenxi thought, Am I just collateral damage at this point?
She picked up her script and walked over. Director Li grumbled, “What are you doing over here?”
Bai Chenxi replied calmly, “Director, after what you said, how could I not come over? Otherwise, I’d never improve.”
Director Li snorted. “Glad you understand.”
There are no walls that can block out the wind, especially not ones under constant scrutiny.
News from the “Beauty’s Calamity” crew quickly made its way online, thanks to some with an agenda who made sure identities were revealed.
Rumors spread that Bai Chenxi had bullied Meng Ling as soon as she joined, forcing her to apologize publicly.
Supposedly, she’d ruined dozens of takes in a single scene, thrown attitude at the director, and needed him to coach her line by line.
In no time at all, #BaiChenxiDivaBehavior# and #BaiChenxiActingSkills# were trending topics.
