Chapter Five: The Girl Who Wanted to Confess
Jiang Yang fell silent. Indeed, he had always harbored some doubts about Ruo Lan. While others might suspect their wives were unfaithful, he questioned her very origins.
Ruo Lan’s appearance, figure, and demeanor marked her as a rare beauty, one in a million. Moreover, she seemed to be quite wealthy. The handbag she carried was a Hermes—he didn’t know the exact model, but it certainly cost at least hundreds of thousands. Her clothes and jewelry were also evidently valuable.
Her lifestyle spoke volumes: she insisted on him staying in the best private hospital, vacationed abroad at five-star hotels, and casually bought him a phone worth over ten thousand yuan.
She was unmistakably a super-rich woman.
Such a woman’s social circle was worlds apart from his own. How could she have fallen for a small-time advertising designer like him?
If she truly cared for him, she could simply support him financially. As long as the money was right, Jiang Yang wouldn’t mind continuing this job.
After all, earning money wasn’t shameful; any work was just work.
But why rush into a flash marriage with him? It made no sense.
Though he was indeed good-looking and sunny in appearance, he wasn’t on the level of a top male model. With her qualities, she must have had countless suitors lined up for blocks. Why would she choose someone like him?
Furthermore, every time they made love, she was as ravenous as a she-wolf starved for seven or eight days.
Even if it was about conceiving a child, the frequency had been excessive.
Had she not accompanied him through the hospital visits and flown with him abroad for vacations, he might have thought he had walked into a fantastical tale come to life.
Yet, he could only half-believe what Doctor Yang said. He didn’t know who had lied, or if all of them had.
He decided not to mention, for now, that Wang Ruo Lan had become his wife.
“Doctor Yang, do you know who I was planning to confess to?” Jiang Yang asked again.
Yang Xiaoran elegantly wiped her rosy lips with a tissue and said slowly, “You told me on the phone that night you intended to confess to a girl. I also know you must have told more than just me about it. But who you planned to confess to—I don’t know. Then you had the accident. Whether these are connected, only you can find the answer.”
Jiang Yang was stunned. One mystery remained unsolved, and now an even bigger one emerged—who exactly was he going to confess to?
---
Yang Xiaoran was right; all these coincidences piled together suggested something was amiss. Perhaps the accident was deliberate. Could the person responsible be his wife, Wang Ruo Lan?
As he recalled the past, a faint ache began in his head. Fortunately, Ruo Lan had prepared some red pills for him at work today; he would need to take one once back at the office.
He muttered to himself, “Who exactly am I supposed to confess to?”
Yang Xiaoran flashed a playful smile and pointed at the deep cleavage visible beneath her blouse. “Why couldn’t the person you want to confess to be me?”
Jiang Yang twitched at the corner of his mouth. “Doctor Yang, please don’t rub against me down there. Let me sort this out first.”
Indeed, the tip of her stiletto heel had been poking into his pant leg and tickling his ankle for quite some time.
Yang Xiaoran narrowed her eyes in displeasure and withdrew her foot from under the table.
She pulled a business card from her bag and placed it before Jiang Yang. “We agreed not to add each other on WeChat. If you have anything you want to ask me, just come to the clinic anytime.”
“Do I need to pay a consultation fee?” Jiang Yang felt this doctor was unusually kind to him. Maybe paying a little for advice would put his mind at ease.
“No, you’re my patient, and I’m also your patient,” Yang Xiaoran replied with a peculiar phrase.
Jiang Yang was taken aback. That phrase carried immense meaning. What did she mean by being his patient too? Had he somehow been treating her in return?
Before he could ask more, Yang Xiaoran stood. “I’ve already paid the bill. Take your time eating.”
Watching her graceful figure leave the private room, Jiang Yang felt she was like a riddle. He had come seeking answers but was left with even more questions.
---
Back at the office that afternoon, Jiang Yang couldn’t focus on work. Just half a day’s experiences had unsettled him deeply.
He opened WeChat, hoping to find some clues.
His current phone was the latest Huawei foldable model, gifted by his wife Wang Ruo Lan. She had accidentally lost his old phone at the hospital.
At first, he hadn’t minded much. That old phone was useless anyway.
But all his contacts were gone, along with every chat record in WeChat. Even today’s call from Yang Xiaoran had come through Chen Hao.
His phone book was completely empty, just like the memories he had lost—void and blank.
As he was lost in thought, a message popped up on WeChat: “Hubby, what are you doing?”
Jiang Yang’s eyes widened as he saw the sender’s name: “Baby.” When had he changed Ruo Lan’s contact to something so mushy?
“Of course I’m working at work. Don’t talk about slacking off on company time—there isn’t even paid bathroom break here.”
“How disgusting! You didn’t even ask who it is before replying?”
Jiang Yang twitched his mouth. “Why would I? You called me hubby. You’re obviously my wife, Ruo Lan.”
“Hmph. Who knows if you have other wives?”
“Wife, there’s only you.”
“Then say it quickly. Wife, I miss you. Send me a voice message.”
Jiang Yang glanced at Chen Hao working beside him, still feeling a bit embarrassed in case anyone overheard.
On the other end, Ruo Lan pressed, seeing he hadn’t replied: “Where are you? Hurry up and say it.”
He lowered his voice, covering his mouth as he spoke into the phone: “Wife, I miss you.”
“That’s too quiet, I can’t hear you.”
He raised his voice a bit. “I miss you!”
Ruo Lan’s heart warmed, a blush rising on her cheek, but she still said, “Louder, I didn’t catch that.”
Jiang Yang had no choice but to raise his volume further: “I miss you!!”
At that moment, Chen Hao overheard and poked his head over. “Which little lover are you thinking about now?”
Ruo Lan’s face stiffened. “What did your colleague say? Why did he say ‘again’?”
Jiang Yang cursed inwardly—women’s sixth sense was truly sharp. She had caught the problematic word with just one syllable.
