Chapter Ninety-One: Choked by His Own Blood
Fu Yang also found it rather eerie and let out a sigh.
“This has gotten serious, President Tang. Call the police.”
Seeing his reaction, Tang Li seemed to guess something as well. Too afraid to look into the refrigerator again, she hurriedly had someone phone the police.
Half an hour later, the police arrived at the company and sealed off the scene before beginning statements from the person who found the body.
Only then did Fu Yang realize that the officer in charge was actually Liu Zhan, an old acquaintance.
“Ah? Fu Yang, what are you doing here?”
“Brother Liu, I was about to ask you the same thing. Back when the people under Shanshan were scattered by Wang Jian, they were transferred from headquarters to the various districts. I never expected you to have such good luck, ending up in charge of one of the busiest districts in River City.”
“Cut the crap. I’m just a squad leader. By the way, since you’re here, this dead woman…”
Fu Yang quickly waved him off and said it had nothing to do with him; he had only come for an interview and an internship position, and had simply stumbled into this mess by chance.
Liu Zhan said the scene was still in good condition and asked Fu Yang to come take a look.
The two of them returned to the break room.
“The police’s provisional conclusion is suicide. Fu Yang, look at the corpse. It’s in a very strange state. She’s curled up inside the refrigerator, and she forced herself so hard that even her spine is nearly broken. And the real cause of death was suffocation.”
“Suffocation?”
Could this Xiao Hua have been secretly feeding Tang Li corpse oil, and now that the affair was exposed, she killed herself out of guilt?
He shook his head, not quite believing it.
“I don’t believe it either. And there’s something even stranger. The suffocation was caused by her biting through her own tongue inside the refrigerator. A large amount of blood flowed back into her airway and killed her.”
At that, Fu Yang could not help but shiver.
“That’s way too damn bizarre. Bitten tongue, then choked to death by blood… If there weren’t ghosts, there’d be ghosts.”
“Exactly. That’s why I asked you to come take a look.”
Fu Yang nodded and stepped forward.
He activated his art and pressed his hand against the woman’s head.
At once, he felt an aura of sinister, uncanny energy, strikingly similar to that of the living-dead curse.
“As expected, it was the work of a curse master!”
Fu Yang immediately understood. This female assistant, Xiao Hua, was also a wronged soul.
She must have been controlled by the curse master, then ordered to put corpse oil into Tang Li’s food and cast the living-dead curse. Once the matter came to light, she was killed.
Of course, it could not have been a true suicide; she had been forced to “commit suicide” under the curse master’s control. Otherwise, no normal person would ever choose such a grotesque, agonizing way to die.
“Damn it! That cursed bastard…”
Fu Yang cursed under his breath.
Just then, the corpse in the refrigerator suddenly opened its eyes and stared straight at Fu Yang!
“Damn it!”
Caught off guard, he staggered back several steps in shock, only to be steadied by Liu Zhan.
“What happened?”
Liu Zhan also leaned in and looked into the refrigerator. The dead woman’s eyes were indeed open, staring blankly in this direction.
Even with years of criminal investigation experience and having seen all kinds of twisted murder cases, he still felt a chill run down his spine.
“It’s nothing, I just got startled. Brother Liu, report this to Wang Jian at headquarters. For matters like this on River City turf, he should be the one handling them officially.”
“Yeah, that makes sense. Anyway, thanks, Brother Fu. If you ever need help with anything, just say the word.”
Liu Zhan patted Fu Yang on the shoulder.
It was clear he rather liked this young man, who was capable yet mild in temperament.
Meanwhile, in the luxurious suite of that same five-star hotel, the curse master Tu Kacha was furious beyond reason.
“Again and again it’s you! You little wretch! You ruined another one of my deals!”
So it was this evil South Sea curse master, Tu Kacha, who had been meddling in the shadows once more.
This assistant, Xiao Hua, had already been controlled by his curse arts and used to secretly poison Tang Li.
After Fu Yang finished his statement and spoke with President Tang for a while, they agreed that he would begin work a few days later.
By the time he prepared to go home, night had already fallen and the city lights were beginning to glow.
“Ha, another day wasted. What a damn hassle.”
Muttering to himself, he shoved his hands into his pockets and ambled back at an easy pace.
Though the distance was not short, Fu Yang had no intention of taking a car. He wanted to walk and enjoy the feeling of being at ease for once.
But as it turned out, some people need not go looking for trouble; trouble will come looking for them.
Within minutes, Fu Yang sensed that something was off.
Amid the crowds flowing through the city at night, it seemed as though a pair of eyes were watching him from the dark.
“What the hell now? Good heavens, I just want to live peacefully. Can these ghosts and spirits stop haunting me all the time…”
Fu Yang rubbed his forehead, vexed.
Suddenly, he felt someone bump his waist.
He reached down at once, and his wallet was gone.
Looking to the side, he saw a small, wiry figure as nimble as a monkey, weaving through the crowd and sprinting away in a certain direction.
“Damn it! So it wasn’t some monster or evil spirit after all. A petty thief actually had the nerve to steal from me?”
Fu Yang roared in anger and took off after him.
The wallet contained a fair amount of cash, along with his ID card, bank cards, student card, and many other important documents. Losing it would be a miserable disaster.
At the same time, he felt a little relieved deep inside: the gaze he had sensed earlier was not some sinister being, just a pickpocket.
He had long heard that public order in River City had not been great lately, with gangs of beggars and the like growing quite brazen. They often trained little brats to steal, which made things very troublesome.
The thief ran ahead, Fu Yang pursued from behind.
Both were fast. In the blink of an eye, they had left the noisy, crowded commercial district behind and reached a quiet area.
“Stop! I said stop, you little bastard! Or I won’t be polite.”
Fu Yang shouted angrily. He could hardly believe that a starving little ragamuffin of a thief could run so fast and have such stamina.
But no matter what, the wallet was too important to lose.
The thief darted into a dark alley with very few streetlights. It twisted and turned inside, the terrain complex and confusing.
Fu Yang, assuming it was just an ordinary theft, did not think much of it and plunged in after him.
At the same time, he sneered inwardly: if it turns out to be a thief gang’s hideout, I’ll wipe them out in one go and earn myself a good-citizen award.
He still had the confidence to deal with a dozen ordinary people.
Panting, the nimble little thief finally reached the dead end of an alley and stopped in front of a high wall. With nowhere left to run, he turned around and looked at Fu Yang.
